Abstract

This review discusses An Introduction to AI and Intercultural Communication Education (Routledge, 2026), edited by Fred Dervin and Hamza R’boul. Its eight chapters examine how generative AI represents culture, using material such as AI-generated texts and images, staged dialogues with chatbots, virtual exchange scenarios and an Indigenous heritage project. The review highlights Holliday’s analysis of Orientalist assumptions in ChatGPT’s ethnographic descriptions. It also covers Jacobsson’s critique of fixed cultural categories, and Choi’s questioning of how AI-supported intercultural competence is measured and who has access to it. The volume is presented as a valuable contribution to critical interculturality, showing that AI-generated discourse is neither ideologically neutral nor culturally independent. The review notes that most chapters are conceptual or exploratory, and calls for classroom-based, comparative and learner-centred research. It recommends the book to scholars and educators in intercultural communication, applied linguistics and language teacher education.
